Block 0
That was the message left in the first block of transactions when the Bitcoin network was launched in 2009. The creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, chose that day and that headline from The Times newspaper as a critique of the fiat monetary system. It referenced the consideration of a second bailout for banks, which were in crisis at the time. On that day, the first block in the network was created—the genesis block, or block 0—because in computer code, things are often indexed starting from zero.
I’m not saying that Bitcoin or any cryptocurrency is going to save the world or spark a revolution in every country, because no one can predict the future. However, it will likely become an even stronger asset than it is now. What I do know is that after my first Bitcoin purchase in December 2022, everything that has happened since has been, quite simply, fascinating.
That year, Bitcoin experienced a significant drop. As a result, I followed the news, read many articles, and started buying more or less regularly. Since then, it has only grown, and watching its growth has been very interesting. I remember that back then there wasn’t much information about where to buy Bitcoin in Guatemala, but I just wanted to participate. I felt like I wanted to join the network and be part of a technological innovation that clearly has a lot of potential for the future. It’s been fun. Happy birthday, Bitcoin—16 fascinating years. Let’s see what happens in the next 16.
